New Year's Resolutions for Golfers: Setting Your Sights on a Better Game

New Year’s Resolutions for Golfers 2024

As the New Year approaches, I can attest that it's the perfect time for golfers to reflect on their game and set goals for improvement in the year that lies ahead. Whether you're a more advanced player or just getting started in 2024, establishing New Year's resolutions can help you stay focused, motivated, and excited about your golfing journey. In this week’s blog, we will help you construct some of your own resolutions while discussing some resolutions that golfers, at any level, can consider as we enter the New Year.

Play more rounds

Play More Rounds

For many golfers, like myself, life can be hectic, and finding time for golf isn't always easy. However, committing to playing more rounds can have numerous benefits for strengthening your skills, identifying areas that need improvement, and overall well-being. Not only does regular play provide opportunities to apply what you've been practicing, but it also allows you to enjoy the social aspects of the game and immerse yourself in the golfing experience.

How You Can Put This Into Action:

Our best advice for implementing this resolution into action is by committing to at least one additional day each month that you will engage in a round. For example, you might set aside one additional Saturday each month for playing a round. Additionally, try out new playing times than you are already accustomed to. If you’re someone who regularly plays on Sunday around 8 AM, try getting an extra round in after work on a Thursday afternoon.

Strengthen Mental Game

Strengthen Mental Game

If you’re a regular reader, you may know that I continue to stress the importance of your mental game while playing golf. Improving the mental aspect of your game can have a profound impact on your overall performance. Golf is not just about physical skill; it's about how you approach each shot, manage your emotions, and maintain focus throughout the round. By committing to enhancing your mental game, you can elevate your golfing experience and achieve greater consistency and success on the course.

How You Can Put This Into Action:

Our recommendation for bringing this resolution to fruition is by practicing mindfulness both on and off the course. One way to do this is by “resetting” yourself as you approach each new hole throughout a round. Close your eyes and imagine the perfect swing, the ball's flight path, and the result landing exactly where you want it. This mental rehearsal can build confidence and familiarity with positive outcomes.

Improve Consistency

Improve Consistency

Improving consistency in golf is a common goal for all players– regardless of skill set. Consistency is key to achieving better results on the course and can lead to a more predictable outcome while engaging in a round. Additionally, improving consistency leads to better muscle memory as your muscles are able to grasp the proper techniques.

How You Can Put This Into Action:

We would suggest by regularly recording your practice swings. This way, you can compare it to swings of professionals or even begin working with a golf instructor to identify any prominent errors that regularly occur. Then, develop specific swing drills that target any errors that you have identified.

Discover New Courses

Discover New Courses

It’s easy to get in the swing of things and accidentally avoid trying out new courses. As a golfer, it’s important to implement trying new courses into your regimen as it gives you the ability to strategize different approaches that you may not have considered when playing courses that you were already accustomed to. Exploring new golf courses can be an exciting way to enhance your golfing experience and challenge yourself in different settings.

How You Can Put This Into Action:

Our recommendation for putting this resolution into fruition is by first researching golf courses available in your area that seem like they would be worth trying. Next, schedule specific months or time of years that you plan to try out the course. For example, if there are four courses in total that you want to experience in 2024, assign each course to certain months such as March, July, September, and December. This way you have a concrete plan entailing which courses in particular you will have discovered by the end of 2024. Be sure to take note of aspects that you enjoyed and did not enjoy about each course!
